Sugar House

Getting to know Sugar House

One of Salt Lake’s oldest neighborhoods, the story of the trendy community of Sugar House begins in the mid-1800s with beets — as in a sugar beet factory. The tree-lined community then morphed into home for a prison, but more recent decades have seen Sugar House become a hip hangout for an eclectic assortment of civic-minded residents. Whether you’re looking for a comfy starter home, a cute condo or a big move-up single-family home in a hot-as-Hades location, Sugar House is an amazing place to call home.

PS: With a nod toward ‘you say toe-may-toe, I say toe-mah-toe’, some folks spell Sugar House as two words, others like to tighten it up to just Sugarhouse. We prefer Sugar House, but each way seems to be accepted in polite company, so your choice.

The Feel

Known for its plethora of locally owned java joints, antique shops, pubs, bookstores, boutiques, night-spots and craft breweries, Sugar House enjoys a hip, trendy, fun and funky vibe. And even better, it’s a very walkable area so strolling along the shop-filled sidewalks is easy-peasy, or you can hop on one of the antique trolleys that dot the community. Homes in this friendly upscale area range from ready-to-renovate (or already renovated) 1920s bungalows to mid-century-modern ranch houses to expansive move-up homes with a bevy of bedrooms. Boasting great schools, a magnificent 110-acre park (Sugar House Park) as well as easy access to the mountains, this close-to-the-heart-of-the-city enclave is within biking distance to the University of Utah and Westminster College — meaning residents run the gamut from young families to commuters to snow-sport aficionados.
